gardens and drive-bys

These works are free form landscapes, if you will, meaning these are worked in what could be called a free style that allows the image to flow onto the paper without any preconceived idea of what it will look like. Inspired by the quiet and sublime beauty of New Mexico and Southern Colorado landscape and flower arrangements from my garden. The result is an explosion of shape, color and movement or conversely an opportunity for meditation on the landscape. The paintings are created using layers of transparent pigments which are allowed to overlap one another creating complex visual effects. Color and line become the dominant elements in these compositions suggesting light and atmospheric conditions rather than merely illustrating literal views. As the work is viewed, inadvertent symbolism emerges, representing our relationship to nature.
